Care and Special Needs
STRODE PARK, HERNE BAY, KENT
Strode Park
St James Surgery
This new building is part of the Strode Park Foundation, an independent voluntary organisation providing care for adults with a physical disability, and is located in the grounds of and linked to the Foundation’s main building, a 19th Century Italianate mansion set in 18 acres of gardens. The brief allowed for internal alterations to the old building as well as a new wing. Seven of the 22 bedrooms are located in the old building and 15 in the new wing.

The new buildings brief was to provide a new rehabilitation centre for up to 22 people providing a relaxing atmosphere for typically 6 – 12 month stays for those in trauma following a car accident or stroke.

Clague’s proposal sweeps in a curve around the northern edge of the site, partially under trees. On the outer, north elevation, each bedroom is provided with a balcony that opens up the room to the external spaces. This has been achieved through the use of lightweight, natural materials coupled with high ceilings open to rafters, lots of windows and fully glazed doors.

Planning permission was achieved and work was completed on site in 2006.
