Integrated Dementia Unit at Broadmeadow Registered Care Centre
The Broadmeadow Registered Care Centre in Folkestone, Kent is a purpose built, 40 - Bed centre for adults, constructed in 2006, which provides valuable respite (a short break for service users and their carers), intermediate care (short-term care for people who have fallen or have been in hospital), therapeutic rehabilitation services (a programme of therapy designed to restore independence and reduce disability) and flat-lets for gaining skills to live independently. Broadmeadow RCC provides facilities which enhance the lives of the old people and younger adults with physical disability living within Shepway.
Kent County Council, who operate the Centre, wished to construct an extension to provide Dementia Care facilities to further enhance services within Shepway, whilst making greater use of the "core facilities" such as reception area, kitchen, laundry, staffing etc, that are already provided within the original building.
KCC initiated a limited design competition for the proposed extension in December 2008. The brief included requirements for Kent Adult Social Services (KASS) residents accommodation at ground floor, and for day care facilities at first floor. Offices for the Old Persons Mental Health Team (OPMHT) are also to be provided at first floor level. All had to be designed to the demanding requirements of the Dementia Services Development Centre based at Sterling University.
The new extension provides 8 no. en-suite bedrooms on the ground floor together with communal areas including Lounge/ Dining Room, Quiet Room and Kitchen. In addition an Assisted Bathroom, Disabled Toilets and an Office are included on this level. The communal areas give access into an enclosed garden on the south side of the block.
On the first floor, the accommodation for the Day Centre and the OPMH Team (Old Persons Mental Health) is located. The former comprises a Day Room, a Lounge Dining c/w kitchen, a Quiet Room, Activity Room, Assisted Bathroom and Disable WC. The OPMH facilities consist of a large open plan office space and 3 No. cellular offices.
Car parking for an additional 22 cars is provided on the southern end of the site with associated landscaping.
Having won the limited competetion and achieved Planning Consent, Clague LLP were novated to WW Martins Ltd, who were appointed to construct the building under a Design & Build contract.
The Building was completed in April 2011 and was officially opened by the leader of Kent County Council, Paul Carter, on 5th July 2011. |
