THE NEW CATHEDRAL SHOP, CANTERBURY
Cathedral Shop Canterbury
Kemsley Mill
Twelve months’ careful restoration work came to a close when the new Cathedral Shop and exit from the Precincts opened for business at 25 Burgate in 2000

The Dean and Chapter’s concept was to place the Cathedral Shop on a new exit from the Cathedral Precincts and also be available to shoppers from Burgate. The shop is the same size as the old shop.

The interior element of the project called for the re-branding of the existing Cathedral Shop to suit its new prime retail location. Due to the diverse product range it was necessary to design a merchandising system capable of displaying products such as audio visual books, prints and maps, cards, stationery and packaging, clothing and accessories, household food, ornaments, toiletries, toy games and coins.

As the shop was to provide a pedestrian link between the Precincts and Burgate, it proved necessary to provide a walkway through the centre of the shop capable of guiding up to 1.5 million people per year through the store to the historic centre of Canterbury.

Due to the deep floor plan the proposals put forward by Clague included a fully glazed pavilion with a patent glazed roof link at the Precincts entrance allowing glimpses of the Cathedral and in particular the Bell Harry Tower. The finishes throughout the store were kept light and natural in appearance with beech being used throughout to add a feeling of lightness and warmth.
