Canterbury City Council's brief for the site was to aid economic regeneration in Whitstable through an imaginative mixed-use scheme with a strong public dimension on this centrally located site.

Clague’s response to this brief was to extend the High Street shopping frontage through to a new public square which is formed at a key pedestrian link to the sea front. The square is a vibrant space addressed by the new community building which contains a public art gallery, a café, and performance space whilst the opposite side of the square features a new restaurant and modern band stand.

The new public square also provides a much improved setting for existing premises including the Pearsons Arms, The Oyster Stores Restaurant and the Prince Albert Public House.

Funding the new public benefits were 34 new households (being houses and flats of various sizes) a restaurant and 5 new shops.
