Clague Architects were instrumental in delivering the second phase of the Horsted Park development in Chatham

Clague Architects were instrumental in delivering the second phase of the Horsted Park development in Chatham, creating 265 new homes on the edge of the town for Countryside Properties.

We have remained sensitive and responsive to the surrounding context, which includes the late 19th-century Land Fort, constructed to protect HM Dockyard Chatham from attack. The immediate context of course contains the successful first phase of housing (by Proctor Matthews Architects) completed before our involvement and our scheme design very much seeks to compliment that.

The proposals were carefully designed to knit into the grain and character of the award winning Phase I scheme whilst also creating a stronger townscape edge and gateway facing the main road (Maidstone Road/Horsted Way) as well as respond to the open countryside to the east of the site. Our scheme was nominated for the Kent Design Awards.

The Extra Care units are designed around a south-facing central courtyard,

The detailed design of the homes continues the distinctive contemporary language and steep gabled roofscape from Phase 1. Panels of feature bricks, glazed stack bond and diagonal diapering in contrasting tones are all used to create variety, texture and celebrate entrances and corners.  Key green spaces and routes through the scheme further reinforce its sense of place and help to orient people within the development.

The Extra Care units are designed around a south-east facing central courtyard, which the community facilities open onto whilst the majority of the units look onto the open countryside that surrounds the site. The building is carefully massed so not to appear as one large monolithic block but a series of forms with the roof lines stepping up creating a building which is human in scale to experience.
