UEL SPORTSDOCK

Architecturally, the building is unified and contained under one perceived roof, but with individual spaces articulated as projecting volumes which has allowed its massing to be broken down.

Previous Masterplans for the University of East London’s Docklands Campus in 1988 and 1996, explored the possibility of a sport and educational facility on site before Clague were commissioned to develop a proposal working closely with main contractor Ball Hall Ltd and the University Estates office.

Intended as both a sports centre and an academic facility, the site was to be of great importance to the University and the wider local community allowing both inclusivity and diversity.

Certain elements of the building are strategically exposed in order to create a sense of clarity and legibility within the design.

Our design had to incorporate an existing Public Right of Way which follows the edge of the Royal Albert Dock to Galleons Reach via the lower southern entrance, then runs through the building and passes the reception and access control into the building to exit on the north-eastern corner.

There are 2 No 10 Badminton court sized sports halls with associated changing rooms and storage. One sports hall marked out for competition Basketball with bleacher seating for spectator viewing and a 100-station fitness suite being the highlights of the ground floor sport side. Whilst on the upper floors, a mixture of sport science, dance studios and “Harvard” style lecture theatres are available. A café / refractory spills into the atrium and a glass wall allows views of activity in the show sports hall.
