OAKS HAMLET
Oaks Hamlet is a new-build private residential development of 55 houses in a mix of 3, 4 and 5 bedroom types and 6 apartments, each with 2 bedrooms. It is a relatively low density scheme of approximately 30 dwellings per hectare to ensure that each home has a fairly substantial garden by modern standards. The apartment building, in the form of a traditional manor house, has large communal gardens, which are formal in design and create a tree lined avenue and vista.
There is also significant public realm in the form of a traditional village green. This creates an important focal point at the entrance to the development, which is between two tall ragstone-built gate lodges. There is also a second, more private communal green fronted by houses, which was designed to respect an existing mature tree. The exceptional landscaping of these communal greens and the public realm as a whole, is key to the character and success of this ‘village’ setting. The planting of these areas was carried out by award-winning garden
designer Julie Johnson.
The design of the houses can be described as Kentish vernacular. However, there are a number of modern elements and contemporary details to highlight features such as balconies, bay windows and porches. The interiors are light and airy, with open-plan living spaces, some of which are double-height. The physical and visual connection between these living spaces and the outdoor landscaping was a major consideration in the designs. |
