OFFICE DEVELOPMENT AT ABBEY COURT, SANDLING, MAIDSTONE
The commission is to design 35,000ft2 of office development for potentially two office users on a very sensitive site at the junction of the M20 with the A229 with the site sitting in a slight hollow with the ground falling towards two lakes to the south and east.
The scheme was designed as a simple courtyard development with the two office buildings together with the two motorways forming the edges of development with access and car parking set into the central space and with places to meet formed between the junction of the various building elements.
This approach allowed for a very simple building relationship and one which maintained an internal and external relationship. The internal relationship creating the formal requirements of car parking and access related to the offices with the external relationship being the interface between the offices and the informal landscape beyond.
