The team was tasked with producing detailed designs for new customer facilities and double HGV parking capacity at Ashford International Truckstop, close to junction 10 of the M20.
GSE Group, owners of the Ashford International Truckstop, had identified an increased demand for secure overnight HGV parking in Kent. The existing truckstop was operating at 97 per cent capacity, its highest ever occupancy rates, and consistently had to turn away more than 200 HGVs a week.
The level of unmet demand was confirmed by the Department for Transport’s 2018 HGV report, which highlighted the serious shortage of spaces in the South East region – Kent Police stated demand outstrips supply by 1,000 to 1,200 spaces per night in the county.
Our Kent architects worked on the project with the Maidstone office of DHA Planning and the
GSE Group, which resulting in plans to increase the current capacity from 300 to 600. The designs brought forward a new building for drivers, offering enhanced hygiene and comfort facilities, restaurants and socialising space.
The plans were submitted to Ashford Borough Council and unanimously approved, and work is well under way.
In addition, the partnership of DHA, GSE and Clague has secured permission for plans for a series of commercial units to provide quality, commercial real estate at Waterbrook in Ashford, creating nearly 1,000 jobs.
By working closely with GSE Group and their colleagues at the truckstop we were able to bring forward high quality designs which will meet the needs of the business and their customers.
The new truckstop also provides community benefits for Ashford by creating an alternative place for HGVs to park safely and not on local lay-bys or trading estates.
