Charles Dickens School

As part of the bid stage for the Kent Building Schools for the Future programme, Clague was asked to consider pre-existing designs for a school in Broadstairs, Kent. Previous designs had been drawn up for The Charles Dickens School, a mixed senior school but there were issues with deliverability and affordability. Clague worked with a team from Land Securities Trillium to create an alternative scheme that was more tailored toward the needs of the school, more achievable in terms of cost and enabled it to function throughout the build programme.

Charles Dickens School in Broadstairs was one of the sample schools we were asked to consider during the bid stage of the Kent Building Schools for the Future programme.

Initial designs had been offered but presented problems for the school in terms of cost and flexibility. As the school needed to function throughout the proposed changes, the original plans were difficult to deliver and not in keeping with the requirements of the site. From a phasing perspective, it would prove difficult to deliver and this would also have a knock-on effect in terms of affordability.

In conjunction with the contractor and the Land Securities Trillium bid team, we put forward an alternative scheme which was tailored towards the school’s need to function throughout the construction period.
