CHARLES DICKENS SCHOOL

Charles Dickens Main

Charles Dickens School in Broadstairs was one of the sample schools that Clague were asked to consider during the bid stage of the Kent Building Schools for the Future Programme (BSF)

A preliminary design for the project had already been put forward by KCC, however, it soon became apparent that, from a phasing perspective, it would prove difficult to deliver and this would also have a knock-on effect in terms of affordability.

In conjunction with the contractor and the Land Securities Trillium bid team Clague put forward an alternative scheme which was tailored towards the schools need to function throughout the construction period.

A corridor runs along the southern edge of these areas leading to the two storey design and technology block located at the eastern extremity of the current building

The main block of the school is set back slightly from the road providing an open space in front of the main entrance. The main entrance leads into the oldest part of the building. This consists of a strip of accommodation stretching east from the entrance and includes the main hall, and large sections of the music accommodation, all of which are single-storey.
