Clague were appointed by the clients Sussex Housing and Care following a design competition to provide an assisted-living residential development to replace the ageing care home operated from their site in Seaford. In addition to the care home the site contained Sussex Housing and Care’s Head Office, as well as other existing residential blocks of accommodation.
Clague where initially required to guide the project from inception through to submission of a detailed planning application which included extensive third party, local authority and public consultation.
Following planning consent Clague worked with the appointed design and build contractor for the technical delivery of the project.
The communal and public facilities were located on the ground floor with access from the principle façade at Sutton Avenue from where residents and visitors could take enjoyment of the secure rear landscaped courtyard and garden.
To achieve the necessary density to make the scheme viable, 3-storeys of accommodation were necessary; this additional height demanding considerable care in the placing of accommodation upon the site, and in particular its key neighbour boundaries and façades at Sutton Avenue, Links Road and Rother Avenue.
The resulting accommodation blends traditional forms with some contemporary materials and detailing to create a building that fits well with the scale and massing of its leafy suburban setting.
