PRIVATE RESIDENTIAL

DIY SOS

A rewarding and fulfilling project, everyone involved in this DIY SOS project gave their time freely and willingly, to create a home to be truly proud of.

The design of a private residential project on the Isle of Sheppey led to a national TV appearance and an awards shortlist for Clague Architects. The biggest ever build project undertaken by BBC’s hugely popular DIY SOS tv show saw Clague design a new home for a family with complex needs. The project, showcased by presenter Nick Knowles, was later shortlisted for a RICS Award, involved demolishing a dilapidated bungalow and redesigning it to meet very specific needs, including the installation of talking doors and remote-controlled toilets.

Completed in October 2016, the project was Highly Commended in the 2018 RICS South East Awards.

The original, poorly constructed bungalow had just three bedrooms and a porch used as a fourth bedroom – its only bathroom was accessed via the kitchen.

Home to a Kent family with four adopted children, three of whom have very complex and life-limiting medical conditions, a simple extension to the original bungalow was never going to provide a truly sustainable solution for the family.

Our solution involved its complete demolition and rebuild to create a home around the family’s specific needs. Working closely with the family, healthcare experts and therapists, it was possible to design and build a home that exactly matched their specifications.

This included the installation of talking doors, a remote-controlled toilet and winches to take the severely disabled young residents from bathroom to bed.
