Designed by Clague in conjunction with Ball Hall Ltd. In an area of Leicester’s city center that has been highlighted for regeneration (adjacent to the Grand Union Canal) in the city councils development plan.


Leicester Community Sports Arena Ltd gave instructions for a detailed design to allow the provision of a new 2 storey sports facility that provides 15 badminton courts, 4 changing rooms with social space and fitness facility on the first floor. The design also needed to be fully accessible by wheelchair users, whilst retaining a contemporary appearance.

It has a gross internal floor area at Ground Floor level of 3451sqm, and a First Floor accommodation of 707sqm. The new sports facility has direct access at ground and first floor level, to a constant floor level and provision of a unisex disabled WC / changing room, male and female WC’s and changing facilities. In addition at both levels a Wheelchair zone disability WC is provided.

The Arena will be the new home to the Leicester Riders and Leicester Cobras Wheelchair Basketball Club, but will also be a regional basketball center of excellence. It will serve as Leicester College’s Sport teaching and learning facility, and as a large multi-use sports venue the local community.
