Mascalls School

Artistic expression requires innovation and inspiration if school pupils are to achieve results.

The design solution for the extension at Mascalls School needed to alleviate a shortage of accommodation across various curriculum areas, particularly in the arts and technology subjects, with dance and drama lessons being undertaken in unsuitable accommodation with limited headroom, music lessons being taught in accommodation without acoustic measures, and art being taught in rooms with poor views and lack of light.

Our solution for the new building was an open atrium over three and a half floors with glazed screen separation to teaching areas allowing views not only outward towards the open countryside, but also inward between the atrium and the various faculty areas and also from faculty to faculty.

This sense of openness and inclusion has been further enhanced by providing large open studio spaces capable of accommodating several year groups simultaneously so that younger pupils can observe and learn from more experienced and proficient pupils.
