Medway Innovation Centre

Secured through a competitive design submission, Clague Architects’ plans for the Medway Innovation Centre, Chatham, created a hub conducive to businesses growth in the commercial sector. Supporting technological advancement and employment in Medway, Clague’s designs for the 30,000ft2 centre brought together contractors Kier South East and Medway Council and was shortlisted in the Medway Design and Regeneration Awards.

The result is a high-quality, serviced office facility and an ‘incubator’ for start-up and established businesses, in particular those that deal in new technologies.

This was the second phase of a concept, instigated by Medway Council, and followed the successful initial development within the BAE Rochester site – now Innovation Park Medway. Conveniently located and with easy and fast access to London and key employment areas, the Innovation Park as a whole has the potential to create 1,300 new jobs in engineering, manufacturing and technology.

The 30,000ft2 Innovation Centre, delivered by Kier South East as the appointed design and build contractor, comprises modulated modern office spaces for small businesses, as well as a second floor subdivided and shared by a number of larger companies.

The offices are supported by a permanently manned reception area and post room, plus a substantial cafe, a large 75-seater business conference suite and a number of informal lounges.

The Innovation Centre is now a well-established part of the Medway business landscape. By providing modern premises it has nurtured growth, with its design playing a large part of this success.

The three-storey masonry and glass facility acts as a gateway building, working within constraints dictated by the A229 and nearby Rochester Airport, and sits alongside the new headquarters of Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex.
