Clague was tasked with the architectural design for Three Mills Lock, the first new lock to be built in London in 20 years. In tackling this important project, Clague worked alongside Design & Build contractor Volker Stevin and Civil & Structural Engineers Tony Gee & Partners.

The challenge for the design team was to develop a proposal that was both functional and elegant, ensuring a pleasing aesthetic with external finishes that would prove durable in the long term.

By working closely with British Waterways, their funding partners and Design for London, the Clague design team was able to provide an innovative and successful answer to the brief.

The new lock opened up the Bow Back Rivers and created a ‘green gateway’ for construction freights and barges serving the 2012 Olympic Park. In legacy mode the lock structure provides a route for leisure crafts, walkers and cyclists.
