Ticehurst, East Sussex

An affordable housing development has been approved by local authority, Rother District Council. Designed by Clague Architects for Thakeham Client, the main contractor, the £6.6m project is underway in Ticehurst, East Sussex. As the site sits within a greenfield area, the plans needed to be sympathetic to its surroundings and village community. The designs will help to provide 40 affordable homes in the area with 65 parking spaces for UK housing developer Optivo.

Working for the first time with Thakeham Client, the main contractor, our brief was to develop a low-density scheme that was sensitive to its surroundings and community. Our designs will deliver 40 affordable homes for Optivo, one of the country’s largest housing providers.

Rother District Council gave the green light to the development in Ticehurst, East Sussex, after we worked closely with the council’s conservation and planning officers. With the site already having outline permission, we engaged with the local community and collaborated closely with the project team, and as a result, revised the plans to deliver a better scheme than originally envisaged.

The £6.6m scheme includes 20 homes for affordable rent and 20 shared-ownership, with a mix of one to four-bedroom houses and flats, with 65 parking spaces.

A large open space is planned for the north of the site and talks are under way with Ticehurst Parish Council about the installation of an informal play area.
