Tovil Boatyard

Clague was asked to review the development potential of a small boatyard on the banks of the River Medway at Tovil, which was located on an important riverside approach into Maidstone town centre.

Working with Maidstone Borough Council Planning Department, the Clague design team developed a proposal that would capitalise on the site’s major attributes, including its stunning location at the river’s edge. Bearing in mind both the tremendous aesthetic value of the site and the fact that the area was located within a floodplain, Clague proposed a series of tall, narrow townhouses, underneath intersecting mono pitch roofs. The design comprised 76 homes in a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments that were stepped in height in line with neighbouring developments.

With abutting land used to create a riverside walk with links into the town centre, the original designs were realised in 2011 as a stunning contemporary scheme that dominates the locale and provides chic housing for local residents.
