University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI)

Clague have secured full planning consent for the proposed Academy of Sport and Well-being under delegated powers. Located on the UHI’s Perth campus, Scotland, this proposed building has an internal floor space of 4,800m2, 51,667ft2.

The building has used a simple pallet of materials, red brick as found on other campus buildings, glazed curtain walling and profile metal cladding. The façade has been designed to respect views over a neighbouring school site and Clague have worked hard to break down the potential large mass of the building.

The Sports Hall is a six badminton court facility designed to an international standard, which is also suitable for indoor hockey. It allows for a full height curtain dividing the hall into two teaching or training areas. Provision has been made for markings and equipment for basketball, hockey, badminton, volleyball, 5-a-side football and netball, and further additional markings can be provided for other sports as required. However it is recommended that an excessive number of lines should be avoided if possible.

A retractable bleacher seating unit providing approximately 428 seats has been included to one side of the hall and it is intended that the indoor hockey pitch and show courts for basketball, volleyball and netball are offset to provide for the seating. It should be noted that four of the badminton courts will also be available in this configuration. On the first floor, the hairdressing salon and the beauty therapy suite have been located above the dance and fitness wing. The hair salon includes 42 work stations.

The project is now going out to tender under a D&B contract and we look forward to seeing the final building.
