Westree Works

As part of a major redevelopment of the water’s edge approach into Maidstone town centre, the Westree Works development was deemed to be of special significance to the town, as it was an important point of arrival into the centre of Maidstone.

Occupying a considerable length of river frontage, the scheme was a valuable residential area and offered a series of opportunities to develop a proposal that would not only respond to the water’s edge location, but would also provide an opportunity to create important links through the site and down to the river bank.

Commissioned by Rydon Homes, the approved scheme comprised a number of buildings with large gaps between them, which created a sense of openness and an almost pastoral ambience. Furthermore, these spaces sought to draw in the life and vitality of the water’s edge, leading it seamlessly through into the heart of the scheme and generating a unique identity and logic, with a clear sense of place.
