Clague were engaged by train operating company Southeastern Ltd and main contractor Redec Ltd to carry out the sympathetic repair of the station, working collaboratively alongside the local council and structural engineers, EAR Sheppard.
Extensive surveys were conducted to establish the scope of repairs which revealed the need to rectify the previous 19th century, unsympathetic repairs to the station. The most challenging aspect of this project was the need to continue to keep the station open to passengers and trains throughout the works, which involved extensive adaption to working practices. Local materials were used within the restoration works wherever possible, including Wealden clay roof tiles.
Listed building consent was granted for the replacement and rebuild of the deteriorating chimney with a brick chimney and the replacement of the guttering. These steps were taken to increase the lifespan of the repairs, to increase the building’s durability and to minimise future risk of water ingress or damp.
