Clague’s designs, with accessibility and facilities in mind, offer multi-level pay points and flexible functionality. A single-storey pavilion structure set in the historic hat-making district of Luton, Clague’s design for the Travel centre takes the form of a teardrop shape in plan located to the east end of the transport interchange area and is designed to work with pedestrian flows and provide a welcoming presence.
The design includes multiple doorways, and an encasement in glassed curtain walling in order to open up its interior to the wider area achieving a sense of transparency. A key component of the project consisted of new facilities for drivers. A self-contained, private area with its own entrance, refreshments and WC provided staff with an upgraded break space.
The information desk providing these facilities can be secured when not in use. A key part of the design involved providing a multi-levelled desk facility to ensure it is accessible to all.
Inside the café space currently occupied by Starbucks has a warm ambience with timber used extensively on the servery area and the ceilings to make the most of the dynamic curved form.
