ST MARTIN OF TOURS, CHELSFIELD

St Martins Chelfield Exterior 2

St Martin of Tours Church is a medieval Grade II* listed church with a nave, chancel, tower and vestry. The building is set outside of the village and prior to the extension being built, the church had no facilities other than the worship area itself.

Clague worked closely with the Parochial Church Committee to propose the creation of a ‘north aisle’ in the traditional manner with two new links to the existing building via the west end of the nave and the tower, respectively.

The basic principle of the scheme and the fine detail were discussed and agreed with the DAC and other statutory bodies, both before and particularly after the successful planning application was made. The new extension was designed to be subordinate in scale to the medieval nave, although the design takes its proportions and use of materials from the church. It is obviously a contemporary building but respects the character of the historic building.
