The church is an important landmark for the area and was at risk of losing its iconic clock dial. Clague were engaged by the Parochial Church Council to carry out urgent structural masonry repairs on the 11th century church which was supported by a Heritage Lottery Fund Grant. Clague worked closely with Pierra Restoration and CDM advisors Baqus throughout the project, following an in-depth photographic survey which helped to establish the scope of repairs.
The church is of Kentish Ragstone construction, which can only be sourced from Gallaher’s Hermitage Quarry near Aylesford and the works were required to be undertaken whilst the church and the churchyard footpath remained open. The specialised repair focused heavily on conserving the upper stages of the tower due to budget limitations. Stonemasonry education to the public was conducted to aid positive engagement and raise awareness of the conservation work involved.
Removing the dial meant the stonework around the dial could be accessed and a new oak dial surround installed with lead flashing for durability. The restoration is a successful example of a sensitive conservation project on a listed church.
