HOUSE AT BETHERSDEN, KENT

This house is a handsome 18th century property situated on the outskirts of Bethersden village, near Ashford in Kent.

The two storey property is constructed in red brick Flemish bond, with plain clay tiled roof and eaves cornice. Brissenden possesses a mix of white painted timber sashes and later casements. The property is sited on a substantial plot with attractive views across the Weald. The site has beautifully maintained gardens, mature trees and a pond to the south.

The main house is surrounded by an array of buildings which indicate its historical significance.

Clague Architects worked with the clients to develop a scheme which removes two modern single storey extensions to the rear of the property and replace them with a more sympathetically designed orangery style extension to accommodate a new kitchen and breakfast room adapting the home to the current lifestyle of the owners. A new pool house was designed for the garden whilst various new traditionally detailed timber joinery elements were designed to replace some unsuitable modern doors and windows on the Listed Building enhancing its relationship with the surrounding gardens.
