Clague were asked by the Dean and Chapter (client) to develop a scheme to refurbish, re-order and extend an existing 3 storey Grade 2 Listed property fronting Burgate in Canterbury.
The listed building had previously been used as a pub and shop over the years and suffered from many unsympathetic alterations throughout its lifetime. The client wanted to fully restore the building and convert it sensitively to provide more adequate accommodation for multiple uses.
The final scheme included the demolition of the unsightly outbuildings to the rear of the property, the inclusion of a new extension to provide kitchen accommodation for the commercial use at ground floor, along with a revised layout to incorporate inclusive access to the commercial area. The existing modern shopfront was replaced with a traditional timber glazed shopfront with stall risers and sliding glass panels. This intervention won the Canterbury Society Design Award for best new shopfront. The upper floors meanwhile were converted into residential apartments with an improved layout and independent access.
Throughout the works we liaised carefully with the Local Authority Conservation Officer and the other local amenity groups.
