ST JOHN THE EVANGELIST, ICKHAM

The Grade 1 Listed church of St John The Evangelist, Ickham is situated on rising ground in the centre of the village overlooking the Street and the picturesque green.

It is framed by a lovely cluster of historic structures including a Jacobean manor house and a remarkably long thatched barn, making its setting one of the most unique and beautiful of any church in the county.

Clague have a long term relationship with the Parochial Church Council, having carried out ongoing Quinquennial Inspections and various repairs for many years.

In 2014 we were appointed to begin assisting the PCC with feasibility studies for an internal re-ordering that would consist of a number of different projects and long-held objectives associated with improved accessibility, improved safety and improved facilities for the congregation and visitors.

We assisted with all stages fof the work including Statements of Need, Faculty Applications, consultations with the local community and heritage bodies, grant giving bodies, etc. Having secured the relevant consents, we provided architectural services through Building Control, Tender Action and on-site supervision.

These projects included a new vestry, new tea-station, new accessible wc, a new spiral stairs to improve access to the belfry, new draft lobby configuration to the south porch, various items of bespoke internal joinery in the form of doors and storage areas etc, provision of a new path suitable for wheelchair access and the removal of a redundant chimney.

The new vestry, wc and tea-station were all located in the west end of the north aisle. The imagery shown here demonstrates the use of bespoke joinery to carefully integrate these elements into the architecture of the church without disruption of the wonderful sense of space. Likewise the new metal spiral stairs which rises a remarkable 27 feet up to the bell-ringing floor, is designed and crafted in lightweight metal elements carefully integrated into the corner of the west tower so as to provide safe access whilst not impinging unduly on the view of the adjacent nave arch and central axis of the church.
