The Horsebridge Arts Centre which has become a focus for this popular seaside town, is characterised by a striking and distinctive curved copper roof addressing the associated public square and band stand.
Five 600sq.ft retail units link The Horsebridge with the High Street and a 3000sq.ft restaurant addresses the new square. The residential element comprises 34 two and three bedroom apartments and town houses.
The end result of the redevelopment has been described as ‘gentle’ architecture. Aside from the Horsebridge Centre itself, the cottages and apartments address the historic street pattern to the site edges and form additional new intimately scaled pedestrian routes in a high density but low-rise sensitive response to this town centre setting.
Timber boarded houses below tiled and slated roofs echo the established vernacular of Whitstable with some more overtly contemporary references being reserved for the Arts centre and restaurant building. Robust natural materials were selected which would age well in this seaside location.
